First, I figured that from last season that Flock (fake Locke) was smokey. And there are many questions that are being answered right now, which is satisfying, but still frustrating given that there are still more layers being revealed. But, that’s why we love the show right?
Here are my thoughts so far – each year we gain a larger perspective of the entire theme of the show, which is still not entirely clear. For the longest time I pinned the overarching argument as free will vs. determinism. Then it was good vs. evil (as exemplified by Jacob and “Esau”) – my theory is that at this point it’s not about good vs. evil and who will win, but more about the depravity of man. Jacob and “Esau”/Floke/Smokey seem to disagree not on the outcome, but on the ability for man to make the right choice. This is evidenced by the fact that Jacob gave Ben a chance to make a different choice before Ben murdered him. It was as if Jacob was trying to use that moment to prove his point – the point being that there is inherent good in man. Flocke of course believes that there is no good in man (which is ironically the accurate theological position) and thus sees his will accomplished through Ben.
One parting note – there is an interesting theory that Richard and the Others are actually the original crew (or) slaves from the Black Rock, which would explain why Flocke told Richard that he was glad to see him out of his chains… just a thought
The episodes are embedded below in case you didn’t get a chance to see them.
My opinion on the major theme of the show…"Nothing is irreversible" {Jack's statement to Locke in reference to his spinal injury, but as we know, means so much more}
Oh, i like the bit about the Others being the black rock crew. Good call.
I'm still on board with the overall theme being freewill vs. determinism, but how could there not be good vs. evil tied in. I don't think Jacob has to believe in the inherent goodness of man to be a protector of choice. I am still unsettled by what the smoke monster/Flocke exactly represents (and why ash and the dharma sonic fence keeps it out), but i'm pulling for Jacob to be revealed more and more as a Christ figure.
what i'm most interested in is what happened when they blew up the construction site and ended up in 2007. I'm thinking that what we saw at LAX is the beginning of how the 815 survivors in 2004 end up back on the island and in 2007.
Another note. i'm beginning to think Christian Shepard is working for Smokey instead of Jacob. It ended up being Smokey/Flocke who told Richard to tell Locke that he had to die. then Christian appeared under the well and told Locke how to leave the island, but did not deny that he would have to die. Then when Frank and Sun are back at the Dharma camp 2007, Christian tells them they need to wait for Jon Locke, whom he must have know would be Smokey looking like Locke.
